“Time heals all wounds” ain’t in the Bible; it’s just an old saying that needs revision. Like the love we feel, we don’t ever “get over” our grief like a head cold! However, the sharpness of the pain eases when we express and share it, learn new ways to carry and incorporate it, and allow ourselves—with God’s help—to be made wiser and more compassionate.

The coming holiday season will include “firsts” for many people who are grieving, and we want to provide as many opportunities as possible for finding hope, help and companionship for the days ahead.

On Friday, November 14, we’ll gather in the Parlor from 10am to 2pm for a day-retreat to learn what is happening in us when we grieve and how our faith can inform our mourning. We’ll also share some ideas about how to prepare for the holidays. We will have the special privilege of hearing from Dr. David Jones, a licensed psychologist who specializes in grief and trauma work. Dr. Jones currently works for AnMed Health in Anderson as senior staff psychologist, and he joined the church this year! I will chime in to present a look at the griefs Jesus experienced and discuss what wisdom we can glean from scripture.

Lunch will be provided at no cost, but, as always, donations are appreciated! Registration is easy: just call Jalyn at 864-233-2527, ext. 103 or register on Realm. We will need to have an accurate number of those coming so we can ensure to have food for everyone!

Grief resources will be provided, Stephen Ministers will be on hand, and the quiet spaces of the Chapel, the Labyrinth and Remembrance Garden, the Media Center and AYMC will all be open for prayer and introspection. We promise to give you space!

This event won’t fix everything, but it will help. Consider it an investment in self-care for the sake of all your relationships. Bring a friend or family member and let’s walk this valley together!
