Over the summer before I moved to Greenville I went on pilgrimage to Scotland with my Divinity school community. We spent time traveling through Scotland and spent nearly 5 days on the Holy Isle of Iona.
During our time on Iona, several companions and I settled into a daily rhythm. We would often wake up early to eat together, go on a long walk around the island, take a cold plunge in the frigid Scottish water and end our days in prayer together at the Abbey.
In the midst of this rhythm we took deeper breaths, lingered longer around tables and took the time to pay attention to glimpses of God around us. These daily habits helped to open the windows of our souls so that the Spirit could move within us.
As a new school year begins and the seasons change and schedules grow busier, I wonder what small habits you can integrate into your life that give you time to slow down and to notice the presence of God already around you?
Maybe it is a daily walk around your neighborhood, a new prayer practice, a playlist for your morning commute, or making time to be in community with others around a table.
Whatever rhythm you find yourself in, I hope it helps open you to the movement of God around you.
