A couple of weeks ago, we introduced our watchword for the year—Breathe. Breathing is an automatic process we often overlook, yet with each breath, so much is happening—both science and faith reveal its deeper significance. In Genesis, God breathes life into humanity, transforming dust into a living being, using Divine breath to create and animate existence. As Irene Kraegel beautifully puts it, “When we breathe, we are receiving a gift from our Creator that has been passed down through generations, ever since God first breathed life into Adam.” Later, when Jesus imparts the Holy Spirit to the disciples, he does so by breathing on them. Breath, then, is not just a biological function—it is a sacred gift from God. Recognizing breath as a divine gift offers a pathway to communion with God. In addition, science tells us that focusing on our breath and taking a few deep breaths can help calm our nervous system and aid in managing the stress in our lives.
One of my favorite ways to pray is by using breath prayer! Breath prayer is an ancient Christian practice dating to the 3rd Century that aligns your breathing with a sacred phrase. It helps center your mind and spirit, connecting you to God with each breath. My go-to breath prayer these days is Holy Spirit… guide me. I invite you to give breath prayer a try. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you begin:
Find a Comfortable Position
Sit comfortably in a chair or on the floor in a way that allows you to breathe deeply. Close your eyes and let yourself relax.
Focus on Your Breathing
Become aware of your breath as it moves in and out. Don’t try to change it—just notice the natural rhythm for a moment. If you find that restorative, take a few deep breaths.
Choose Your Prayer
Choose one simple phrase from scripture to meditate on during your prayer. Here are some examples:
• Be still…God is here. (Psalm 46:10)
• Nothing can separate me…from the love of God. (Romans 8:38-39)
• Your grace…is enough.
(2 Corinthians 12:9)
• Peace of Christ…guard my heart and mind. (Philippians 4:7)
• When I am afraid…I will trust you. (Psalm 56:3)
• Lord Jesus…have mercy on me. (Luke 18:38)
Begin Your Breath Prayer
Inhale deeply. As you breathe in, silently say the first part of your chosen prayer or phrase (e.g., “Be still…”). Exhale slowly. As you breathe out, silently say the second part of the phrase (e.g., “God is here.”).
Repeat and Focus
Continue repeating the breath prayer for 5 quiet minutes or longer. Allow your mind and body to relax into the rhythm of your breath and prayer. Focus on the presence of God as you breathe.
