“In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught.”—Baba Dioum
When I saw this quote at the Greenville Zoo last year, my first thought was of what we teach our children and youth at FBG. Although the quote’s origin relates to conservation of natural resources, it struck me that it also applies to the conservation of people and their stories. As a church family, the opportunities we give our children—learning theology through music, studying other cultures, hearing examples of ancient and modern-day people responding to God’s call—are shaping their beliefs about God and others. If they are taught young to love and respect all of God’s children, I believe they will hold onto this as they grow.
We will resume Wednesdays at First (in person and masked) beginning September 15! Preschool and Elementary Music and Missions is 5:30-7:00pm. Families of children ages K3 through 5th grade should have received an email with more information about our curriculum and schedule. If you did not receive the email or know someone you would like to invite, please reach out, and we will be happy to share more details!
When we invest in providing opportunities like Wednesdays at First for our children, we are also conserving friendships! Take a look at this old photo. Can you recognize some familiar faces from 1985? Among them are Leigh Joye, Sharon Russo, Jenna Manning and myself—all of whom are involved church members today! These were some of my Wednesday night friends who became my youth group friends and are still friends today! Along with Sundays, summers and other special activities, Wednesday nights are one more opportunity we have to give our children the gift of church family.
Visit https://firstbaptistgreenville.com/preschool-children-registration/ to access the registration form. If you have other questions about children’s music and missions, please reach out to me or Amy Joye. We look forward to seeing you and your children on Wednesday nights in addition to Sunday mornings this fall!
