Prayers of Advent is a new piece for choir and chamber orchestra with music by Shelton Ridge Love and text by Jim Dant. Our Sanctuary Choir is preparing this music for three Sunday morning services during Advent: December 8, 15 and 22. We are excited to be the first to sing and hear this beautiful music and share it with our congregation and community. The piece is divided into three movements based on ancient Hebrew texts and English lyrics:

“Zechariah’s Prayer”—a lyrical prayer for God’s mercy and peace alternating with a celebrative, rhythmically propelling music of blessing for the God of Israel.

“Mary’s Song”—the radical words of the Magnificat: “My soul magnifies the Lord…God has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly….” The music is an unusual, beautiful setting of the wonder of Mary in this incredible circumstance.

“The Angels’ Message”—“Fear not, God is still with us…”—a powerful setting of this text that we always need to hear and remember.

We hope that you will set aside time for each of our Advent services this season—for thoughtfully crafted services of music, prayers and the spoken word from Jim Dant. The joyful Hanging of the Green service begins Advent on December 1. The Sunday evening, December 22, Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols and the 5pm Christmas Eve Communion service have become the most loved services of the year in our community.
