We are honored to host alumni from the Furman University Concert Choir Reunion under the direction of Dr. Milburn Price in our Sunday morning worship service on May 22. The Furman Concert Choir was organized in 1960 as a small, auditioned group that sang choral music from all periods of music history. Under the direction of Dr. Milburn Price, the choir appeared at the national American Choral Directors Association Conference in Kansas City in 1971, the Southern Baptist Convention church music conference in Philadelphia in 1972, and numerous conferences of church musicians and music educators. The choir toured Brazil in 1972 and was one of five American choirs selected to participate in the Vienna Choral Symposium in 1973.
Dr. Milburn Price has served as Dean of the School of Performing Arts at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama; Dean of the School of Church Music at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and Chair of the Furman University Music Department. He has served as national president of the American Choral Directors Association. He is a gifted composer and writer and has written texts and music for many hymns and choral compositions. He is also co-author of The Dialogue of Worship and A Survey of Christian Hymnody.
Joseph Martin is guest pianist with the Furman Concert Choir alumni. A gifted composer as well as pianist, Mr. Martin has performed solo piano recitals and been the featured artist with symphony orchestras in the US and abroad. His recordings have been enormously popular in sacred and secular markets. Recognized throughout the US for his many choral compositions, his music is published by numerous publishing houses.
