Summer is my favorite season—I love strolling outside in the evening light and savoring simple joys like ice cream, grilling out, and fresh tomatoes and peaches. With the kids out of school, mornings are less hectic, and bedtime is less rushed, so our family’s pace slows a bit. This summer, I look forward to our family’s camping vacation at Huntington Beach State Park and the opportunity to attend the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s General Assembly in nearby Greensboro, NC, from June 19-21. Indeed, I invite you to join me at the General Assembly; it’s a chance for our First Baptist community to connect with our broader Baptist siblings and learn more about how we are partnering to share the love of Christ around the world.
At home, First Baptist has an enriching summer lineup planned, including our One-Reads, a preaching series exploring the wisdom literature of the Bible, and Summer of Lovingkindness Combined Adult Sunday School. Join us as we embrace the joys of summer and deepen our faith together!
Summer of Lovingkindness
Summer Sunday School Series begins June 9!
“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.” (Psalm 103:8)
Do you feel like the world could use a little more hope and a little less rancor? This summer, we explore the hope offered in God’s lovingkindness in our families, at work, in the community, and at church. Gather in the Fellowship Hall at 9:15am for coffee and conversation with friends. Program time of prayer, music, and learning begins at 9:30am.
Summer One-Reads
Looking for some summer reading? Dive into our First Baptist Summer One-Read! We’ve selected three thought-provoking books for you to explore at your own pace over the summer:
Seculosity by David Zahl delves into society’s relentless pursuit of “enoughness” through career success, material possessions, political affiliations, and relationships, ultimately highlighting the universal yearning for grace.
Woven: Nurturing a Faith Your Kid Doesn’t Have to Heal From by Meredith Miller offers fresh insights on nurturing children’s faith, guiding them toward a resilient and enduring relationship with God. Plus, Miller will be our featured speaker at First Baptist on September 14-15!
Sacred Self-Care by Chanequa Walker-Barnes provides a holistic approach to self-care, blending clinical psychology with Christian spirituality. Through a seven-week program, Walker-Barnes invites readers to reclaim wellness and balance in mind, body and spirit.
Pick up these books independently or purchase a copy at the church, and get ready for meaningful conversation in the fall! Happy reading!
Preaching Series Wisdom Literature of the Bible
Beginning June 9, join us this summer for a Sunday morning preaching series on the wisdom literature of the Bible, which includes Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Solomon. Each book offers a unique perspective on the human condition and the search for meaning. From Proverbs’ practical wisdom to Ecclesiastes’ existential ponderings, we will explore the ancient wisdom tradition, where practical guidance meets philosophical reflection on life’s most profound questions.
