Last Monday, a remarkable gathering unfolded as over 1600 individuals from 28 diverse congregations came together for GOAL’s (Greenville Organized for Accountable Leadership) Nehemiah Action. In the spirit of Psalm 140:2, which declares, “I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy,” it echoed the clear mandate found in Scripture to care for the marginalized, poor and vulnerable among us. We lifted our voices to advocate for affordable housing and increased support for mental health services for people in need in our city.

In a culture where headlines too often highlight the fractures within Christianity, and conflicts frequently overshadow common ground, being part of such a diverse assembly of individuals from various faith backgrounds, all dedicated to a vital justice cause, was a gift. As I looked around at the faces of people from different walks of life, I saw a beautiful tapestry of faith in action. I was particularly grateful for the active engagement of so many First Baptist folks in this crucial kin-dom work!

It was a heartening sight to see our congregation working hand in hand with other people of faith, demonstrating our collective commitment to effecting positive change in our community. While this event was a significant step forward, it’s important to remember that the work is far from over. However, this moment, filled with the spirit of God’s love and justice, was one that I believe brought a smile to God’s face and one that we should all be proud of.
