Though children (and teachers) may not be ready to admit it just yet, school will be back in session next month—meaning it’s also time for the annual School Tools program through United Way of Greenville County! Each summer, United Way collects back-to-school items for children in the county whose families struggle to afford such purchases. This year, they have asked that their various community partners each donate filled backpacks for students at one specific school. Therefore, throughout the month of July we are collecting filled backpacks for students at a Greenville County elementary school. Please note that this is a little different than our typical Monthly Missions drive in that we are aiming to take in as many backpacks as possible filled with all of the school supplies necessary for a single student. To accomplish this, we encourage you and your family to buy a backpack and fill it with the specified school supplies listed in this article. Or, feel free to work with your Sunday School class, Circle group, Just Faith group, choir friends, neighbors, etc., to set a collective goal to build a certain number of backpacks. As a bonus, this creates an opportunity for a “packing party” to assemble the bags and get together with your group! If you and/or your group intend to fill one or more backpacks, please indicate that here so that we have accurate estimates for United Way.
Can’t fill a backpack this year? In that case, please choose any items from the list below to donate. These will ultimately go through United Way to the school district to be distributed to children in need across various schools throughout the year.
To fill a backpack, please buy a backpack for an elementary-school-aged child (5-11 years old) and fill it with the following:
● 2+ Spiral notebooks
● 3+ Folders with pockets
● Assignment pad
● Crayons (box of 12+)
● #2 pencils and erasers
● Pencil box
● Glue sticks or glue
● Ruler
● Safety scissors
● Packs of facial tissue
● Antibacterial waterless soap
● Earbuds
If you wish to donate, please bring your completed backpack(s) and/or individual school supplies to the church Reception Area any time throughout the month on Monday–Friday (9am-5pm), or any Sunday morning through August 1. Please be sure to complete the form at the link in the article, too!
