What can children do at First Baptist Greenville?

So much!

On Sundays, our children participate in age graded Sunday School classes and enjoy a special children’s message during the worship service designed just for them. Fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to lead the congregation into worship each week as acolytes, and the second Sunday of October is always Children’s Sabbath, a special worship service led by our children.

Children also participate in Discipleship classes, Children’s Missions Weeks, Camp Prism, and Vacation Bible School, as well as occasional art experiences designed to nurture their growing spiritual lives. Outings are planned each month during the school year to give children the chance to deepen friendships and build community. On Wednesday nights our children enjoy age grouped choirs and Children on Mission, our missions education classes. We treasure children at First Baptist Greenville!

Sunday School

Children at FBC spend the Sunday School hour experiencing the sacred stories from the Bible through Godly Play, a Montessori style form of Christian nurture. Find out more about Godly Play at a blog written specifically for FBG families and teachers of Godly Play, here.

Our Sunday Morning Schedule

9:15  Fellowship Time, Gather in the Children’s Activity Room for snacks and games

9:25  Children’s Announcements and Dismissal to age-graded Sunday School Classes on the Children’s Hall

9:25-10:15  Sunday School

At FBG, children play an important part of our worship services.

Fourth and fifth graders can serve as acolytes, leading us into worship each Sunday. All children have the opportunity to lead in Children’s Sabbath on the second Sunday each October.

A Children’s Order of Worship is provided most Sundays, as well as a children’s message designed especially for them. During worship services, children may enjoy a worship bag filled with art supplies, keeping their hands busy while their ears are listening.

Wednesdays for Children

Children’s Choirs & Mission Friends/Children on Mission

Children’s choirs and Children on Mission share a time slot as a part of Wednesdays at First activities from 5:30-7:00 pm. Children on Mission meets from 5:30-6:15 pm, followed by Children’s Choirs from 6:15-7:00 pm.

Elementary ages meet on the B-400 hall. The five-year-olds meet in A-306, and the four-year-olds meet in A-304. The three-year-olds meet in B-207 from 5:30-6:15pm and are then care for by Nursery Staff until MidWeek Fellowship concludes at 7:00pm.

The Children’s Committee organizes a fun outing each month to help our children get to know each other better and build strong friendships. Each event has a missions component.

The purpose of Discipleship Class is to help our children begin to understand some of the basics of our faith heritage. What does it mean to be a Christian? What happens when you’re baptized? What is involved in church membership?

Of course, no child is pressured into making a profession of faith but all are encouraged to begin the journey toward a life of following Christ.

Discipleship Class is typically offered in the fall and is usually taken by children in the fourth or fifth grade. Discipleship Class 2019 will be offered as a retreat, November 9-10.

At FBG we strive to give children opportunities to build their faith in all sorts of creative ways. Carol Ann Good, a wonderfully talented member and local elementary school art teacher often leads Art After Worship, in which children express their faith through art. Classes in the past have made multimedia collages, prayer boxes, and crosses.

We’ve also offered opportunities for children interested in drama to use their talents to tell the sacred stories of the Bible through film.

So much happens in the summertime at FBG!

Missions Weeks
During Missions Weeks, children learn about service organizations doing good work in our community. We tour these places, like Meals on Wheels and the Greenville Literacy Association, and join in with helping others. We also learn Bible verses and keep a Missions Journal, in which we reflect about our experiences serving God and our neighbors.

Missions Week for First and Second Graders lasts from 9-12. During their Missions Week, our older children bring lunch and stay until 3:30. Their day also includes an afternoon outing just for fun.

Camp Prism
Camp Prism is a sleepaway camp for four days in July at Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Our third, fourth and fifth graders attend, along with children from seven other CBF churches. We enjoy campfires, Bible Study, swimming, arts and crafts, singing, zip-lining, and all sorts of outdoor fun.

Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is always a highlight of our summers. Children learn Bible stories, play games, eat snack, do art, and sing and play together!

What do you get when you combine elements of Vacation Bible School with missions outings and fun field trips? Two Missions Blast Weeks, packed with Bible study, games, crafts and missions work- and field trips just for fun! This year both our Missions Blast weeks begin on a Sunday after church and go through Wednesday. We have a great time together as we learn to be the hands and feet of God!
