Rustlings (September 18, 2017)

Moving is almost always hard. It typically involves packing, tossing, leaving the old and acclimating to the new. This past Sunday, our church family packed up hymnals, Bibles, guest cards and pencils. We tossed those bits of trash that had accumulated in the pew racks. We left our old Sanctuary with her discolored carpet, well-worn pew pads and scarred parquet. When we return, all things will have been made new. For the next two Sundays, we will gather for morning worship in the Fellowship Hall. Extra chairs have been rented, an engineer has plotted the seating and orders of worship have been adjusted. It is going to be delightful and inspiring to hear the songs, prayers, sermons and litanies of God’s people in such a tight space. On Sunday morning, October 8, we plan to gather for worship in the renovated Sanctuary. I think everyone will really like the rust-colored, shag carpet I picked out…

We are not the only group moving into the Fellowship Hall. For several years, the Spotlight Series of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra has performed at Centre Stage Theater downtown. In recent years, parking, access and availability have become limited at that facility. We offered our church’s Fellowship Hall as a possible venue for this symphony series…and they have accepted. Spotlight Series events are usually about an hour long and include musical pieces performed by only a few principal symphony players – usually two to four instruments. It is more casual than the Masterpiece or Chamber Series and much more personal. Rather than theater seating (as at Centre Stage), the Fellowship Hall will provide ‘table seating.’ Patrons may purchase a seat or a whole table for the event.

This year’s performances will be on September 30, January 6 and February 24. There are two performances on these Saturdays at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. Single tickets for each event are just $15, and tables will seat six. Of course, season tickets can be purchased for all three events. I’m hoping our church family will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and boost the attendance at the Spotlight Series events. They are truly fun for the whole family.

So…I’ll see you in the Fellowship Hall this Sunday morning for worship. Hopefully, I’ll see you on Saturday, September 30, for the first Spotlight Series event. While moving is often hard, I think these moves will be fun!
